What an end to the first-ever season for the Hamilton Unified basketball season in 2024. The Hamilton High School and Hamilton Middle School athletes took to the floor for an intrasquad game on Friday, March 15 inside the HHS gymnasium. More importantly, they were able to play as part of an all-school assembly, with all students and staff grades 5-12 present.
The environment was incredible - from rally towels, signs supporting the athletes, music, dance moves, and t-shirt tosses, students and staff all had a fantastic time. In fact, one athlete was moved to tears after the game while talking to one of the coaches.
"I had so much fun," she said, crying, "I'm so excited right now, that was amazing."
Students were able to witness the power of Unified Sports, most for the first time. Unified Sports blend students with and without intellectual disabilities on the same team.
"That was the most amazing basketball game I've ever been to," said 8th grade student Talon while talking to a staff member after the game.
Kayla Kuczynski of Special Olympics attended the game and also took a few minutes to speak to the students in attendance about the power of inclusion and embracing different abilities.
WZZM 13 News also covered the event and will have a story on the news on March 15 at 5 and 6 PM!
Way to go Hamilton staff, students, coaches, and administration and way to go Unified Hawkeyes!
