At all Hamilton elementary schools, students are taking on new responsibilities as part of an exciting initiative aimed at fostering a sense of ownership and pride in their school environments through Meaningful Work. The program, which encourages students to apply for various jobs around their school buildings, is designed to instill a greater sense of responsibility while teaching valuable life skills.

Blue Star Elementary hosted its first-ever job fair on Friday, October 4. Students applied for positions that support many areas of daily school operations. These roles range from assisting with breakfast and lunch clean-up in the cafeteria to helping supervise and clean up the playground. Other jobs include delivering items to classrooms, assisting with assemblies, taking care of plants, and even working on the school news to inform their classmates of various happenings.

"We're using this job fair to launch our meaningful work and blue crew which are kids that are going to be demonstrating their leadership in the school and community," said social worker Tricia Sal.

This initiative is more than just a chance for students to help with daily tasks; it offers them opportunities to practice leadership and collaboration. Whether they are organizing materials for an assembly or making sure the playground is clean and safe, students are contributing in meaningful ways that have a real impact on their peers and school staff.

"It's really cool that we get to help out and do our jobs," said a third grade student, "It's awesome that we can be helpful."

The job program also aligns with Hamilton Community Schools' emphasis on creating well-rounded learners who take initiative and learn through hands-on experience. As the students grow in their roles, the hope is that they also grow in their confidence and sense of belonging within their school communities.

From Blue Star Elementary to Bentheim Elementary and beyond, this program is helping build strong, responsible, and engaged students who are prepared for the challenges of the future.
